First of all, I have to say that I HATE, HATE, HATE the format here. I have spent the last 20 minutes trying to post this in an appropriate forum, but to no avail. This is NOT user-friendly AT ALL. I mean, technically this post should have gone under "worming products", but damned if I can find a way to post there. And don't even get me started as to how as soon as I move my mouse 1/4" I get sent to one of the left-bar topics. . .. . Now to get to my question - what is with the big PANACUR push by vets???? I have been using Anthelcide EQ for years, & apparently both Anthelcide & Panacure are the same product. So WHY am I being pushed to use Panacure? Is there a difference? Is there a kickback?

I went and looked at the Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Dewormers: Anthelminics » Discussions for Topics Not Covered Above topic and saw that the post new discussion was not turned on. So I turned it on Bonita and apologize for the confusion. Though Anthelcide and Panacur are both benzimadazoles they are related but they are not the same product and behave differently. However we do not recommend the routine use of any benzimadazole, the article associated with this forum, Overview of Deworming, explains why. I don't know of any kickback program but I don't use the product either. DrO

Sorry Dr. O - guess I was having a "PMS Moment" - lol! But am glad to hear that not everyone in the med profession is out there promoting Panacur. I recently had a mare colic badly. Apparently no impaction according to the vet, but a LOT (& I mean a LOT) of reflux material came out of her via tubing, & as she was just coming due for worming (I do my closed herd of 7 every 7 weeks), the vet advised (& sold me) 4 tubes of Panacur to give her over 4 days. As I had just been thru quite an ordeal with this mare, I didn't question - just paid & administered - but this is not the first time I have had a vet insist on the 5-day Panacur "thing". I have always done my horses rotationally every 7 weeks with an "Ivermectin - Anthelcide - Ivermectin - Strongid - Ivermectin" routine, & have always had clean fecal counts. Just can't figure the "Panacur" connection.
