How long/or short should you leave horses out on new grass to start to get them acclimated? My boys have been on dry lot, some grass has been growing in the grove so they have been eating some as soon as it pops up. But the 2 have been on grass and rich alfalfa all winter. My older guy is the one that has been getting the runs from even looking at an alfalfa leaf apparently! I had to turn them out for about 35 minutes, whilewe got the poop spreader out. But I would like to get them out in the pasture soon. It has only been turning green around here for about 2 weeks? thanks suz

A lot depends on relative size, sex, personalities, and how much space they have Edna. Also what resources (other pastures, paddocks, etc.) are available to you. Can we have a little background? DrO

ok, yes i would love to give background! my horse has only had paddock turnout since january. he had eye surgery [now recovered] and even though he used to go out in a group of 8 geldings of various ages he has only been turned out either by himself or with one other gelding for the past 2 years. i would like for him to return to a more "fullfilling" turn out situation with 4 other geldings all over 10 yrs old [my horse is 16]in a pasture that is about 2 acres [i'm not real good on estimating size but it is pretty big!] one of the horses already in the group was his turnout buddy before there are several paddocks used mostly for lame horses or other special situations thanks for any suggestions you can offer! edna

Hello Edna, I think I would start with turning out with a few of the easiest going of the group until well established then you try everyone together. It is best, though not always possible, when everyone is first turned out togeher that no one have back shoes on. DrO

Dr. O, I am having trouble locating the schedule for turning horses out on pasture in the spring. I have lush pastures and want to be sure I do this correctly. I read through Care for Horses Nutrition Forages for Horses, an Overview - and I can't find the schedule you referred to above. Could you describe where exactly the schedule is located? Thank you! Heidi
