Due to recent weather in northeast, I have an increasing infestation of ground bees in my horse barn and cross-tie areas. They are getting worse each day, and are apparently trying to burrow into every little hole in the horse area of th barn. Our pest control expert tells us the active ingredient for killing these is esfenvalerate, which is residual. The product name is Conquer. Our stalls and barn are wood and concrete, and these buggers are burrowing into everything! I'm wondering if this is safe for horses. If not, what is?

Hello Linda, Esfenvalerate and fenvalerate are synthetic pyrethrins. As such they are in one of the safest insecticide groups used. There are no specific studies of toxicity in horses but there is no reason to suspect it wold be different than other pyrethrins. However how much danger there is to your horses depends largely on how much feed contamination results from the use. This can best be determined by a pesticide professional who can look at your specific situation. DrO
