Hi All,
Last September when I bought my little mustang, Dakota, he was a dark red roan, black mane and tail, and black legs. This spring when he started to shed, he lost all of his red hair and turned silver - very gorgeous. However, he is still shedding and is losing his silver and the red is coming back. I have never seen a horse change colors twice in one shedding season. Not that I mind, he's still a great looking guy no matter what color he is.

Has anyone else seen this happen? I'll try and take some pictures before he totally loses his silver and then when the red is back completely. Very odd.

Holly,

I too had a red red red bay hackney pony mare with four even white stockings. Very cute she was!

As she started to shed her winter coat, her hairs too turned silver to where she looked more like a red roan than a bay. I always wondered if the hairs lost pigment as they died off and started to detatch.

That's a thought about the hair losing pigment. I did notice that the silver hair was very fine and thin and I what I thought was skin underneath was his red coat coming in.

Dr. O. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

Yes I think your horse lost the red hairs and the remaining white hairs (along with the new white hairs coming back in) gave him a silvery appearance that has disappeared as it is diluted with the red hairs.
