Posted on Wednesday, Jun 2, 2004 - 6:37 pm: My mare was on a course of bute as she was "off." My instructor taught me this trick:Cut an apple in half. Cut your bute tablets in half or quarters. Poke the pieces of bute in each apple half and feed - by hand or in the feed bin. Delicious apples work well as they are grainy and easy to poke the bute in. Cheers. |

I got the apple flavored bute and mixed with his favorite equine senior, added his supplement and a gurgle of oil to make it stick and my boy has been taking his daily dose of bute for the last four weeks with no hassle! It was nice to tell the pills by-by.. Smiles, Debra |

Add a little water if neccesary and put in with some feed. The pills might have to be ground first. Banana flavoured pudding might work also.I am very lucky that my gelding will eat anything so I cannot really relate to problems of giving Bute. Deworming paste is a different story. He used to get Cherry flavoured powder and now he has the Apple flavoured powder. Like Mary Poppins used to sing "A spoonful of suger will help the medicine go down" Cheers, Susan B. |

I put it in his feed and he never leaves any of it in the bucket. This has been the easiest way for me to get him to take the bute and I have tried everything!Have a good day Chris |

She takes peppermint treats and starlight mints and puts them through the coffee grinder. Add a gram of bute and your good to go. Word of warning mix with bute later or keep out of the dogs reach. Our lab ate four "bombs". She wet her bed for three days and seemed to feel no pain but was fine. Her bloodwork came back fine and we now mix the bute when we are going to administer it. |

Posted on Thursday, Jan 27, 2005 - 6:46 pm: No one believes how I give pills, including bute. I tried grinding them up, mixing it with various concoctions, the whole nine yards. Then one day one of my boarders asked me to medicate her horse while she was out of town. "Just DrOp them whole in his feed" she said. I didn't believe her until I tried it. With bute I break the tablets into quarters. The trick is NOT to have any powder. Like my blood pressure pills, there is no taste until they disolve, and by that time it's too late for the horse to spit them out. I use a small bucket held by hand if the horse tends to scatter their food and this method has been sucessful with horses who routinely refused bute before. To date it has worked with every horse and no I have not had any hold the pills in their cheek and spit them out later.Barbara |
