I have a three-month foal, which gets up from her naps as a cow does. She stands her hind end up first while resting on her knees then gets up with one front at a time. I thought this was cute when she was smaller but she has never changed the way she gets up. Most horses I know put their front legs straight out in front of them then rock/push themselves up with their hind end. This foal’s method of rising has now caused her to get a slight swelling of the outer area of her knees. Bulbous if-you-will. She is not lame nor have any flexing issues. She just has not learned how to rise “normally”. Is there anything I can do to stop her from rising this way? I am afraid it may cause joint troubles or scar tissue thus an eyesore of bulbous knees! One thought is that black circle “thing” which helps to heal a horse whose heel meets their elbow causing sores. (I do not know what they are called.) Maybe she will not be able to rest with both feet under her girth with those on. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Denise

Denise, When you find her lying down in the stall, why not try manually positioning the front legs straight out in front of her then encourage her to stand? Maybe a few demonstrations might be all that is needed. DrO

I was thinking the same thing. I have cameras in my stalls and I was going to run out everytime I see her down and pull her legs out. Great advice - Thank you, Denise

FYI - those "circle things" are shoe boil boots.
