I purchased a 18 year old quarter horse towards the end of winter when he had a full coat. He has now lost all of it except on the top of his rump towards his tail and the top of his tail curls up. I have wormed him and I know he doesn't have anywhere to rub his tail. Does anyone know what causes this? My other quarter horse has never had this problem.

You should contact the previous owner and see if there is a history of this. He could be showing early signs of equine cushingnoid disease, see Equine Diseases » Endocrine Disorders » Cushing's SynDrOme and Pituitary Tumors.

Thank you for your advise. I have made contact and apparently this horse was in perfect health so she really isn't any help or doesn't want to be. I will have a vet come out and do a blood test. Thanks again.

Karen, if this is the only problem you have, why not just clip him and go on. I would find little justification for the expense in an otherwise healthy horse.
