Does anyone know if it's bad for a horse to eat pumpkin skins? My husband accidentally let my 3yo QH gelding eat some pumpkin skins and the horse nearly knocked him over to get more - he loved them!! I'm a little concerned that they might not be good for horses. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I do not know of any problems Tracey as long as they chew them well. DrO

Pumpkins are really a squash, so I'd think they'd be o.k. Our horses love watermelon rinds-preferable with a little flesh left on them. I'd just be sure they were washed and didn't have any pesticide on them.

Pumpkins are fine for horses. My old Appy LOVED them, and would eat every part of one. Since he couldn't masticate hay, I was surprised that he could eat them, but he did, and looked forward to receiving one every day during the fall and winter.

You know, I've read in several places how horses LOVE watermelon rinds, so cut some up & offered them to the gang yesterday. They looked at me like I was serving them hemlock with a cyanide chaser. Two even gave me the flehman gesture (you know, the curled upper lip), which I took to be the equine equivalent of thumbing their noses at me!

Some of my horses love watermelon rind, and also other melons. Some of them give me the same reaction your guys did. They all seem to have very individual prefrences. I have a couple who won't even eat apples or carrots, but love granola bars. Ones' favorite treat is plumbs (pitted) I once had a horse whose big love was raspberries, and have known horses that like donuts and coffee.

I guess they all have their individual preferences! Reminds me of a cat I used to have that was extremely adept at stealing green olives, doughnut holes and pizza! dyd

I think it's all in what the horses are used to. Several years ago, I had a meeting in Puerto Rico. On an afternoon off, some of us opted to go on a trail ride--many of us saved the apples from our boxed lunches for the horses. The horses wouldn't even look at the apples. The handler said that the horses weren't exposed to apples (not native to P.R.), didn't like them, but loved tropical fruit. Although surprised at the time (since my horse LOVES apples), it certainly made sense when I thought about it. No doubt that individual preferences play a big part of it too. My friend used to own a QH that would eat anything and everything. I'd had turkey sandwiches snatched out of my hand by this horse. He'd eat granola, candy, you name it. At the same time, if I offered my TB the same piece of candy, he'd spit it 20 feet (especially M&Ms--go figure!)and give me a look of complete disgust. Such funny, amazing creatures!

My quarter horse WooDrOw loves blackberries and will even pick them delicately off the vine. Knew a horse that loved Snickers candy bars. I used to buy her one every day from the vendor at the show. I'd bring her over with me and the vendor got such a kick out of watching her gobble it down. My mustang hasn't developed a taste for apples yet but loves carrots.

My current gang of 7 will only eat carrots & certain brands of commercial horse cookies. Apples & any brand of apple-flavored horse cookie is looked at with total disdain. Now my first horse LOVED everything. Peaches, grapes, cookies, & his all-time after-ride favorite - a couple of good-sized slurps of dark beer. Porter to be exact. He'd nearly break the crossties when hearing the hiss of the bottle being opened. Whatta guy.

Any thoughts on feeding pumpkins to an EPSM horse? I do not know the carb/sugar content...

I would think they are rather starchy so questionable. DrO
