Posted on Thursday, Jul 8, 2004 - 6:31 pm: I have two geldings in a pasture. They constantly pull off their break away halters and fly masks- one horse got bit last week from something that causes his whole eye to swell! Anyone have any solutions to these gelding games of pull off whatever is on your face??? I have put the fly masks under the break away halters- to no avail- help!! |

That's working well against my mouthy yearling, who trashed her mom's new Cashel Crusader in 3 days. Can you put something nasty tasting on the parts they're biting -- if they're not close to the eyes? Maybe just forget the masks and use fly wipe on their faces. |

My problem is that when turned out in the fields they rub their heads on everything they can find and put big snags in the mesh. I guess they get sweaty and itchy under the fleece. So, I am resorting to rubbing their faces with fly spray and using masks in the barn and paddocks only. |

Posted on Sunday, Jul 11, 2004 - 6:43 pm: I did purchase the new mask- just becuase it has two velcro closures- still no luck- I do use the roll on fly stuff-I use that for the inside of the ears and face... I like to use the full fly mask to cover the white nose of one of my geldings- but they play so rough- that is torn almost all the way across the nose-it is no wonder that the velcro isn't holding....I put their break away halters on top of the mask- and find them each morning together in a clump- I think I will try garlic supplements next- anyone find those helpful?? |

Posted on Monday, Jul 12, 2004 - 11:58 am: Guys,Use the Kensington mask. It also has double closures, and my gelding, who is diasterous with anything left on in turn out, only lost it a few times during the year and a half it lasted. It has been destroyed now, and I am going to buy a new one. I use their leg wraps too. Here is the web site https://kensingtonproducts.com/. My old one had a long nose, which I think is the "delux" though they don't have a picture of it. Hope this helps. Alicia |

It took me a whole year to find one of her masks and halter. I was in the fenced area around the hay barn. I dont even know how she got in there. Good luck Cindy.Colleen |

Posted on Monday, Jul 12, 2004 - 10:17 pm: Alicia-how does the Kensington mask hold up to horses' rubbing on fences, trees, etc.? For me that's as big or bigger problem than them getting lost.Liliana-I've tried the fringes. They are great on the trail to keep flies away from their eyes, or if you have one horse alone. But, my hores seem to take glee in ripping each others off, chewing on them, etc. |

Posted on Tuesday, Jul 13, 2004 - 10:44 am: Sara,All I can tell you is that it lasted through the end of two seasons ago, last season, and about two months into this season. My gelding is not easy on his turn out equipment. We lose many halters. He likes to play, has rubbed cuts into his face on various items (haven't seen it happening, but appear to be anything from the ground to the fence, to hay). I am getting another one, though it will be expensive (they want to charge 10 dollars to ship a 23 dollar mask!). I am looking for a place to get it cheaper. Right now, Guinness has a Cashel on, and it pretty much comes off every day. Alicia |

Posted on Wednesday, Jul 14, 2004 - 12:03 am: Alicia-I just saw Kensington masks in one of my many catalogs, but can't remember which one. I'll have to look. Do you know of Marys Tack and Feed in Del Mar, California? I know they carry the Kensington brand and put out a catalog. I don't know if they are on line or not. If I come across one in a catalog I'll let you know.Have you also used the Kensington sheets? |

Posted on Wednesday, Jul 14, 2004 - 2:59 pm: Sara,I don't know of Mary's tack and feed, but if they have a phone number on their catalog, I would love to have it. I used the sheet last summer, but I wanted my horse to be a little tougher this year. He was so used to not getting bit, he was crazy while showing and the flies were on him. I know it is not a very good reason, but I do still use the mask and leg wraps, to keep his eyes and ears free, as well as to keep him from stomping off his bare feet! Thanks in advance for the help on the number! Alicia |
