Dr. O. My trainer pointed out to me that Levi's sheath was quite swollen. She asked if I had ever cleaned his sheath. I am sorry to say in 4 years I had not. What would cause this area to be swollen. I had not noticed it swollen like this before he began training. She said she would work on attempting to clean it for me. does this indicate an infection, or what should i be doing. She said he is having no problems urinating.

There are many reasons a sheath might become swollen and if cleaning does not fix it in several days, or if it worsens at any time I would call the vet. We have an article on sheath cleaning see, Care for Horses » Particular Situations & Procedures » Sheath Cleaning in Horses. For reasons why it might be swollen and how to differentiate swellings Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses.

Dr. O, I read the swelling article, but did not see any referrence to sheath swelling. If he was use to being turned out every day, and he is now stalled except for his working time, could this contribute to swelling in this area? He has been gelding, but there is a mare with a foal in the area, would this have anything to do with it, or just plain exercising more strenously than he has been use to?
thanks

Though the article does not mention the sheath specifically all the principles on assessing swelling under the skin apply. Yes less pasture exercise in general might increase swelling and no I don't think the mare and foal are a factor.

You might look to see if he has any tick bites that may have caused the swelling. This happened to my gelding and his sheath swelled a lot. Some of the ticks were still there and I removed them. The bites were not easily seen at first. I gave him banamine for the swelling for a few days and hosed him with cold water for about 15 min. 2X a day. He improved a lot each day but took almost a week before all the swelling was gone.
