I need some advice on what to use to close off the openings of a run in. One of my horses has a broken leg and needs to be confined. Thanks. -Gwen

Gwen, do you mean the opening from a shed or stall into the run in? I've used 12' gates, if that's the size of your opening. That way you can still get in. Or if you have other access, you could buy some round pen panels (always a good way to start a collection!)

It depends on your horse, though. A gate or panel has openings if your horse is restless, and might paw. Also, my mare can really bend a gate or panel if she puts her mind (well, actually, her butt) into it.

You could put up channel on either side of your opening and slide boards into it if you need a solid wall.

Hi Jerre,
I actually just thought of something this morning! I would like to try to create a little paddock for him to go in and out of since the vet said to let him into a small turn out area. I was trying to find one of those portable fences, but I think the round pen panels might be what I need. What are they?

Gwen, A round pen will probably cost more than a portable electric fence. Both sure come in handy though!

Priefert has panels, as do lots of companies. The panels are generally 12 feet, made of pipe, and have some sort of feet so they stand on top of the ground. Around here, all the feed stores carry them. They hook together to form however large a pen you need, and you can get one that has a gate in it, also. Depending on size and strength, they run $70-$120 per 12 feet, so they're not cheap!

If you think you'll move it a lot, a light-weight one might be good, but it won't hold an enthusiastic horse as well.

Portable electric fences can come as kits, or you can use step-in posts and hot tape, hooked to a charger.

Do some Internet searches on "round pen panels," and "portable electric fences" and you'll find out enough to really confuse the issue!
