Posted on Thursday, Oct 4, 2007 - 6:04 pm: Dr. O, I hve a gelding that has awful front hoofs, left was dx with a avulsion fracture of the navicular bone, the right one an extensor processor fracture of the articulating joint.. Ok that being said... I have been taking farrier x rays of his feet so that we make sure he is in balance.. He has been going nicely this past year, till this last week ... His mysterious bruise is back.. This is a photo taken last year or longer, he has not had brusing like this since.. Yesterday farrier was here to do him, every 4 weeks, and the bruise is back, only now it is slightly more to the inside not right in the middle.. I have an appointment the end of the month for a navicular series of x rays.. Do you have any suggestions or other views you think i should have taken??? Any idea what can be causing this bruise..? This is the left navicular hoof. Also when doing his feet yesterday, the right one had considerable more growth then the left/ bruised one? That tells me circulation is an issue.?? I know in my mind that his days are limited, but golly if only.. He is the gelding in my profile.. Thanks for any advice or direction to lead me/ us.. On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots. |

It has my farrier questioning it as well.. The last time, this photo, he had said the same thing, he has white hoofs bruises like this show up easier.. He is kept in a field with nothing really that he can whack it on.. He has been going sound this year, last week i noticed he was irregular and chalked it up to close to being shod.. Then yesterday when the farrier took off his bell boots and cleaned up the hoof there it was.. It looks like it is right were the coffin bone would tip?On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots. |

The bruising is common, lameness in the foot is common, I have trouble finding a relationship between the two where the bruise occurs first. What have the diagnosis been in the past?DrO |

For having such awful hoofs he has been doing well till last week, head bob on corners tracking left, good on the long side with just slight hesitation.. Then that mysterious bruise shows up once again.. He has a wedged pad on with dental impression material packing..Do you suggest another navicular series of x rays? My horses with white feet often have these colorations and have never had a lameness associated with them. I think they are like those mysterious bruises that show up on my body in odd places that I have no recollection of "whacking". |

I am sitting there watching him and AH HA! His tire feeder.. He picked this huge HEAVY feeder up and DrOps it to shake off the leaves of the hay!~ He does this all the time.. I am thinking after your comments that this most likely is not caused internally that he must put that left hoof out slightly when he lifts and the tire WHACKS his hoof, thus always in the same place, same size etc.. So now i have to watch him lifting this and see how he places his hoof!~Maybe the mystery is solved.. Now only if he could hang onto another year of sound hoofs!~ Thanks all..
