I have just returned from the vet with my 2 1/2 year old quarter horse and was told she had wave mouth, which would require floating her teeth every 6 months. She had an injury to her jaw bone 6 months ago which caused an injury to the root of the pm2 tooth leading to an abcess and bone death. My question is could the wave mouth pattern be caused by the abnormal chewing due to the abcess or a conformation problem. If it is caused by a conformation problem is there anyway of correcting the problem.

Hello Deborah,
From here we cannot tell and to answer your questions would probably take a set of radiographs of the jaw. No matter what the cause correction centers around proper floating or more accurately molar alignment using floating tools.

My 6 year old Arab was just floated for wave mouth this summer. Up until then, he was floated by hand every year. But between 5 and 6 he developed parrot mouth and wave mouth. I had an equine dentist and my vet this time. Although they use power tools they are well trained and do not let the tools get the teeth too hot causing tooth death. So in just normal growth teeth can become abnormal. My horses seem to need more dental care when they are younger and after the permanent teeth, things level off. It is difficult to get the same level of balance in the teeth with manual floating. Having a problem doesn't necessarily mean a conformation defect. Gail

Gail, that is unusual, has you vet commented on the cause of this change?

Hi DrO,
The vet who did the original manual teeth floatings is not the same vet who discovered the wave mouth and helped in the electrical dentistry. She did not specifically say why his teeth were suddenly so bad. I will check with her next time I talk with her. Thanks. Gail
