We have a mare that we purchased basically to keep her from going to slaughter. She has a busted up right knee, reportedly from falling on ice and no treatment ever done. Anyway, her feet are very long on front forcing all the weight on the heel which I think puts more stress on the bad leg. It appears that the pain is too great for her to allow me to hold front feet up long enough to clean, let alone trim. I have worked with her for several months now, and that is why I am convinced it is the pain or discomfort that is the problem. Is it realistic to administer pain medication, or even put her out for the trimming. I am sure a good trim would help her pain greatly, but I am afraid of hurting her in the process. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello Dennis,
The last time I had a horse like this we had to buy a sling to raise the horse up off the ground and trim. I would worry about the horse's ability to go down and come up safely from a general anesthesia.

Thanks Dr O ... I am already researching that possibility. I agree with your concerns.
