One of the three weanlings that arrived last Saturday has had diarrhea since last Sunday. As soon as I could get them all quietly haltered and calm, I wormed all three with a half dose of strongid (Monday). Saw dead worms (ascarids?) in the poop for about three days. Two of the weanlings are fine, but the diarrhea continues in the third. She is five months old. Sunday or Monday they should have a full dose of strongid if I read the article right. They have not had any deworming (or handling!). Should I give her the wormer? She is eating, peeing and drinking. She is quiet but doesn't seem depressed. These girls are going to accelerate my learning as I'm new to babies! And I in turn will probably try Dr. O's patience! I feel like a new Mom, worrying about the frequency and consistency of poop!! Any experience from those of you who have been through these weanling months--bring it on!

Hello Julie, The first step to deciding is there anything seriously wrong with the quiet weanling with diarrhea is to evaluate the vital signs, see Diseases of Horses » First Aid » Taking Temperature, Pulse, and Respiration. Assuming no problems appear indicating serious systemic disease that need professional help consider the possibilities at Diseases of Horses » Colic, Diarrhea, GI Tract » Diarrhea in Horses » Diarrhea an Overview. Otherwise continue with your planned deworming for those who might be very wormy. If after studying this information you still have questions, bring'em here. DrO
