There were archived discussions. But couldn't add to them. So, i started this one. I want to know if goat parasites like coccidiosis can cause problems in the horse. Or vice versa, any parasites the horse might have hurt the goat? Same with sheep, but i haven't gotten any yet. (grin) Anyone have both on their property and have any insights, tips, etc... I heard one kind of food given to dairy goats (rumensin) is toxic to horses. Any other worries like that is what i am looking for... i don't want to make stupid mistakes. Like letting the goats eat something the horse can't have. or vice versa... thanks, jojo

In genral parasites are somewhat specific for the hosts with the exception of mites. Howeer there are dozens of examples of rare disease cross overs. It would not worry me to put healthy goats and horses together. DrO

Hi, Jojo, Horses and goats get along pretty well once they overcome the initial nervousness. If there are only a couple of goats or so, they may even become inseparable friends, to the extend that they'll happily share a stall. Keep in mind that some types of goats are very mischievious (the younger they are and the more mountainous their origin the worse) so you may need to take extra measures to secure grain and other sweets. Sheep seem unable to overcome their fear of horses (as far as I know) and this interferes with their grazing time and well being.
