Hi, I am new to Horseadvice, and thanks for the wealth of information available to me, it is of great help. I have recently paddocked an area which now includes a few choke cherry trees (that is what we call them here in New England anyway). For a few weeks, the trees were a nice scratching post, but I noticed today that my horse was chewing the bark off the tree. I tried to locate a thread covering this, but I could not see anything, so any help would be appreciated, I need to understand what trees may be poisonous, thanks

Hi Ruppert...a fellow New Englander here. Cut down your choke cherry trees.....we had the same problem here, there were several in our newly formed pasture & the surrounding acres. We needed to call in a tree expert, he went around our land & marked a big orange "X" on all of the chokes & we subsequently cut them all down. From what I remember it's the falling leaves that are so dangerous....I remember reading a post somewhere (??) about the leaves turning to a dangerous bi-product in their stomachs...sorry I'm so vague! Be careful when you dispose of the trees/leaves as well. Good luck!

Hi Ruth...Dorothy again...do I feel like a dub..went back and checked my notes; the choke cherry trees are okay, it was the BLACK CHERRY trees we needed to remove from the pastures. So relax....my horses have been eating the bark from everything vertical for 2 plus years & they are fine!

A number of cherry (Prunus) species are poisonous including, wild cherry, bitter cherry, choke cherry, black cherry, pin cherry. I think some of these names refer to the same tree. It is the leaves and the seeds (fruits) that are poisonous and when the leaves are wilted it increases their toxicity. DrO

Thanks so much Dorothy and DrO, this is of great help. I will take your advice and have a professional look at all the trees, as you know they love to have them around, but I don't want to take any chances. Dorothy, don't feel bad at all, you knew a lot more than I, but as you will note, DrO included choke cherry in his list of poisonous one, so be sure to add that to your list when needed! Thanks again, Ruth
