When calculating the amount of lysine needed for a horse's ration, how much of the crude protein value is to be assumed from lysine? Any? Prior to the days of adding lysine to concentrates, how was this value estimated?

The lysine content of the protein varies depending on the particular foodstuff. It was measured by breaking down the proteins to their individual aminio acids and determining the amount that was lysine. I beleive the percent lysine of the protein by feedstuff is listed in the 1989 NRC Equine Feeding Handbook.
