Good Morning --

I posted this yesterday but it was under 'performance horse nutrition'. So I'm re-posting here which seems like a better place for this question:-) Sorry about the mix up.

Good Morning DR O -

I've been using a 'yeast' supplement (Succeed) and it's really helped my uptight horse immensely. I'd like to continue, however, this product is very expensive - approx $100 per month per horse. The ingredients are listed as follows:
Oat Flour
Oat Oil
Irradiated Dried Yeast
L-Threonine
L-Glutamine
Guar Gum

I'm wondering if there's a 'generic' form that I could purchase (Bulk would be fine)? Or if one of the ingredients in the above combo is super special when added to the yeast product that it would be hard to replace with 'generic'? Have I simply bought into marketing?!?!?!

I love the product but with two horses on it - it's costing a bundle!

Thanks in advance!

Dawn to formulate a generic we will need the concentrations and the dosage rate.

Dr. O Thank you for your response. The dosage is 2oz per day the first 7 days, 1 oz after that. How would I find the concentrations? I've also contacted DiamondV products and wondering if that could be an answer? It may be a matter of trial and error.

Thank you,
Dawn

Well let me say in general Dawn that I don't see anything special in this product. The one ingredient that one may concentrate on is the yeast, but it has been irradiated which kills the active organisms. While studies on live culture are conflicting when used as a substantial part of the diet benefits have been seen is studies conducted by the company that sells them, see the article for more on this. Listing a few amino acids is just confusing as these amino acids are in all feed stuffs. I personally believe supplementing with oats and vegetable oil will give the same results inexpensively.

Thank you again Dr O.
I've been doing more research on 'Nutritional Yeast' - intended for humans. Seems like it may act similar to the yeast product marketed for horses?! Only less expensive. Any thoughts?
Thank you

Dawn I have not had to supplement Brewer's yeast to a horse in order for it to do very well nor do I know of a clear benefit from its administration to a healthy horse. I am uncertain there is much benefit to the practice. The article states a experiment where a benefit was found but that was a 1/4lb daily and the effect small and it remains unclear it was that healthy: is it good to push foal growth?
