I am running fecal exams for my herd about every month or so. I have a microscope set up in my tack room with 40x-100x-400x. I know the optimal situation is to use a McMasters slide and formula for parasite load however, I was curious about your thoughts on my proceedure. I collect a tablespoon or so of fecal matter and strain the grass out of it by pushing fecalsol over the sample, thru a tea strainer and into a small cup. I set up the remaining liquid (that in the cup) in a tube and cover with a slidecover for 10-15 min Then I read the slide for parasites. I continue to worm spring and fall with Ivermectin Gold but only worm additionally on an as needed basis. Do you think this is acceptable?

I really cannot say, Jamie as I have never seen this procedure evaluated. I would be concerned with the short contact of liquid with the feces. I am uncertain why you do not do the routine procedure using Fecasol, a commercial fecal vial and strainer, and a regular slide and slip. The only you don't have is the vial and strainer and they only cost a few bucks. DrO
