We have a mare who came to our barn about a week ago to get ready to go to a sale. She was put on sweet feed-like all the boarders here. Now-after she is rode with a little bit of pressure-she sweats a lot and is reluctant to move-as if tying up. After she cools down she is fine. The owners claim this did not happen when they rode her but she had a sweet feed-pellet mix. Could it be she just cant handle the sweet feed. She also has a light on her in stall now--------where she did not before-could the lighs be effecting her in some way to cause this. Thanx!!!

Hello Susuan, There are many possible explanations for pain and stiffness. To see the range of possibilities go to Equine Diseases » Lameness » Localizing Lameness in the Horse. There is a subtopic in this article on Stiff Horses that discusses the rule outs. The lights are not a problem and but it could be the sweet feed even though she was on it before. But the place to start is understanding the range of possibilities and a thorough exam that includes looking for evidence of them all. See the article and the links to the specfic diseases (including tying up) that could cause stiffness to figure this out. DrO
