Discussion on Addition of Selenium Supplement = Perkier Horse? | |

Posted on Monday, Feb 4, 2008 - 5:21 pm: DrO,Around 2 months ago I started all my horses on a supplement that provides 1mg Selenium and 1000 IU of Vit E, per scoop. This is in a nutritional yeast culture base. I believe that is the correct amount for an average 1000 pound horse for an area that is known to be selenium deficient. All horses get this in a small (13 oz) coffee can of SafeChoice, just enough to mix supplements in. One mare, who is almost 19, has been somewhat DrOopy for many years. I've had vets comment on her "listless look" but no one has suggested anything like testing or supplements. I've noticed that she is a lot brighter eyed and perkier since adding the SE & E. She has also been on a joint supplement for the last year. Have you noticed anything like this in your years of practice? Would selenium take the dull listless look from her eyes and make her bright eyed and bushy tailed?! I have to add, this is the same horse I posted about a month or so ago, that was staggering and falling down. I thought she had injured her spine and/or neck falling into the fence! |

Posted on Tuesday, Feb 5, 2008 - 4:30 pm: Dr. Oglesby, help. A POA, belonging to a child I teach, became uneven behind in 11/06. I kept requesting the mother to please have the vet look at him. It progressed to the point where I refused to teach her daughter until someone looked at him. In 3/07, our vet x-rayed hocks, stifles, and tested for EPM. Finally it was assessed to be low vitamin E with possible nerve damage. He has been on 10,000 iu/day since 4/07. He appears to be strong, coordinated, and cheerful. He feels great to ride. Is this level safe? He has been on this dose for 10 months. Is it necessary to recheck? Should I get really assertive to get this pony retested? Thank you! |
