Discussion on Worming in sub zero weather

Dr. O, It has been miserably cold here in Iowa. Dusty the old guy, had that bout of impaction colic a few weeks back. We are over due for our worming, as I have been worried about worming during the cold. Is there any reason that the stress of deworming would have on already stressed out freeeeeezzzzzing conditions. I usually have them on an 8 week schedule. They were done beginning of November, so I am about 4 weeks behind. Is there any reason, I should continue to wait till it maybe warms up?

Susan I was going to ask the same question . Mine are over due also but with the stress of this cold I was wondering if it would hurt to wait. I don't imagine they have picked up worms since their last worming was after it started freezing, but wasn't sure.

Though individual idiosyncratic reactions are reported I don't believe any of the recommendations we make are "stressful" unless the horses have lots of larvae or parasites to kill. If you are concerned you might consider a fecal to check the horses and if clean skip deworming till you get a positive (for more on this see the "Professional Recommendation" in the article). We have half a dozen or so farms that do not regularly deworm (but do regularly check for parasites) after following our deworming program for several years. It appears to have just about eliminated strongyles and rounds on the farm. Some of these farms are now on their third year with no evidence of parasites!

Just wondering, unless there was a very heavy load of parasites is worming actually stressful for a horse?

It was not too long ago and still on the market are dewormers containing organophosphates which do stress the system. So you have to ask this question on a product by product basis.
