Dr O: I would like to discontinue regular dewormings and use the results of fecals to manage parasites, i.e., the parasitologist's recommendation as described on your web site. I have two horses. The first was adopted in August 2007 and has had two negative fecals 6 months apart. No other horses have been on our pastures prior to this horse. The second horse (1-year old colt) was just adopted and dewormed with Equimax before he was bought home. A fecal test after two weeks was negative. Both horses will remain on our property for the foreseeable future and no new horses will be introduced to our "herd of two". After 2-3 more weeks in quarantine, I will introduce the second horse to pasture. Should I deworm this horse with Quest before I release him to catch the L4 larvae missed by Equimax? Do you have any other suggestions? At this point in time it appears that our pastures are parasite free. We would like to keep them that way if possible. Thanks.

Hello George,
if your goal is to prevent any contamination the extra moxidectin deworming then a week more until introduced would be sensible.
