Posted on Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008 - 10:58 pm: We live about 1 hour south of Dallas. I have 2 horses whose coats I need to protect from sun bleaching - a black tobiano and a sorrel. Last year, we stalled during the "sunny hours" and turned out at night. That won't be possible this year.Does anyone have any suggestions about how to keep their coats from fading without sweating them to death?!?! It won't be long until it's pretty hot and humid here. I have two Kool Coat sheets, which are white cotton blends, and seem like they may not stand up to turn-out, but I may be wrong. Only used them in the barn last year. Stalling all day is not an option, regardless of exercise level. These two need to be "out-and-about" to stay sane. I just need to keep them black and brown. There is lots of shade, but horses don't always understand that they need to be pretty for the show! I thought about buying several cheep nylon sheets that can be sacrificed, but not sure how hot those are. Wanted some input before putting out the $$. Thanks from Michelle, Roper, and Tuff in Texas! |

It provides bug and sun protection, hoses off nicely, is tan so doesn't attract the sun as much and doesn't show all the dirt like white sheets. Has a belly band and neck cover. And in OK heat he has never come in sweating. We tried one of the other Rambo flysheets last year and it was too heavy, stiff as a board and boy did my horse sweat. Make sure you look for the tan one that says Protector if you would like to research it.Mine has never ever ever torn even when there are bite marks apparent under the sheet from other horses which is a plus as my gelding is always the bottom of the herd. It's a bit pricy at $135 but is going on 3 seasons and still going strong although I had to give mine to a smaller horse because I didn't read the labels and put it in the dryer. Do not do that. I almost cried. I loved that sheet! Good luck with your search. |

My horse is VERY hot natured (draft cross) and he did fine with it, it didn't make him any more hot than he was already and his coat stayed beautiful! The sheet is much softer than those stiff hard sheets but super durable!BTW Corrine, my husband put mine in the dryer! I had to buy another one because no other sheet comes close! It's worth every penny! |

The sales woman stuck a pencil through it, then just pulled the material and you couldn't even see where the "hole" was..there wasn't any. I was really impressed as my horses take special pleasure in ripping up each other's sheets and blankets. The sheet is a mesh that would protect from flies as well as sun. |

Posted on Thursday, Apr 3, 2008 - 12:59 pm: Thanks very much! I have a Rambo fly sheet (see posts last year this time - gelding with HORRIFIC fly allergies) and it worked very well, but he was SOO hot!Did not know Rambo made different types! I'm going to track some down this evening. Anyone used the Kool Coats? Do they work to keep them cooler? I might use them in the paddocks. We try to wash all sheets reg. to keep from getting yucky skin. Michelle |

Posted on Thursday, Apr 3, 2008 - 3:00 pm: There are a few different kinds of Rambo flysheets. The one we got as a replacement last year was silver and so heavy he could only go out at night in it. I was not a fan of that one. It was comprable in price but much much too heavy. It was not the protector but I am not at the barn so I can't varify the name. The Protector only comes in Oatmeal color and not one horse in 105 degrees ever came in sweaty. It seems to allow moisture to escape. The entire barn we were at the first year here wears them now.Just looked at the Rambo site and it looks as if the heavier version is no longer on sale. They also have a fly buster version that looks like the protector and seems to be the same cooler softer material and has a bug repellant infused into the material. Good luck! |

It gets very hot and humid here in Indiana too - plus, I used to live in Dallas, so I know how it is! - and this sheet is white and very light and cool. The one I have has the built in neck cover and removable/adjustable belly cover.I went from the heavy Rambo to this because, I agree, the heavy Rambos are HOT! Suzy |

Posted on Tuesday, Mar 24, 2009 - 12:57 pm: I am reposting to this thread I started last year....my daughter put my 78" rambo protector on the wrong horse, and it was too big. It got ripped to SHREDS!! The 2 year old is fine, but the sheet is in horse blanket heaven..... I have to order a new fly sheet pronto.Anyway, has anyone in the hot, humid part of the country used the Amigo Bug Buster? Does it have nylon lining so it won't rub? Does it hold up very well? I checked the Horsware website, and it doesn't say. Also, has anyone in the US used the Amigo Sweetitch Hoody? It comes all the way up and over their ears! I can't find it in US. Thanks for any info. |
