Umm, I'm confused. Are the mountains getting ticks??

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

If you want to remove a tick from yourself, dog or horse, you want to use tweezers very close and lightly near the head where the thing is attached and gently pull in the opposite direction it has inserted itself - so likely a slight angle. The object is to not squish the body so everything is regurgitated in the wound, not to break the head off and not to run around screaming "aaahh oooh icckkkk" which is what I usually do.

If you want to repel ticks to minimize attachment to horses, buy mix it yourself fly spray and read where it says how to mix for tick repellent. Apply every day or two around the legs, tail, belly, etc. as the ticks hitch a ride in tall grass and low lying bush areas.

Rinsing the horses after riding could help wash the ticks off before attaching. Then spray repellent again.

Check yourself for ticks every day. I have been know to spray horse bug repellent on my clothes to ward off insects.

Stay out of tall grass and brushy wooded areas if you can.

Burning ticks off, applying nail polish or vaseline to ticks are not recommended ways to remove a tick

HTH. Ask again if I totally misunderstood.

I've been using EquiSpot (Farnham) for 2 years and haven't found a single live tick on my horse (although I have found a few dead ones in her feathers).

It's a 'spot-on' repellent that's applied every 2 weeks. I've bought it at both a local tack shop and from State Line Tack via catalogue.

Now if I could only find something that would keep the ticks off me . . .

It has been reported here that Deep Woods Off is safe to use on horses, and very effective at repelling tics.
