Hi all, just wanted your thoughts on fescue hay. We never gave our horses this and I'm getting different feedbacks as good horse hay, except for broodmares, and others saying horses colic or foundered on it. This hay has some orchard mixed in it, clean, no weeds/no rain. Sounds good, price is good, but wanted to make sure good for the horse. Some of you might remember that I have a horse that has foundered previously (she is doing great now). I wanted to make sure fescue would be okay for her too. Thanks

Hello Lydia, Most of the horses in the SE US and every where there is primarily a clay type, slightly acid soil and long moderate temperature growing seasons are pastured on fescue pasture and fed fescue hay, including my horses. It seems whenever a hay becomes availalble in and area where the forage type is not generally available people like to attribute any problems they have to the most recent change. Of course is forages of anytype are too rapidly changed colic becomes much more likely. For more on fescue and its qualities see the article on forages. DrO

Thanks Dr. O. I wanted to be sure and cautious especially with a chronic founderer that fescue isn't a bad choice in hay. Thanks again, I appreciate your time.
