Dr. O: I own a 27 year old SWB/TB cross gelding that is in great physical condition, but now retired from riding. My vet has reduced the number of vaccinations he gets, and spreads the inoculations out to one a month in the spring. For some reason, he has eliminated the Eastern and Western Encephalitis vaccines from the annual schedule, and he was not vaccinated this spring for these. I have since moved him to a farm that is right next to a large river which is prone to flooding in heavy rain. I feel that he should get the EWEE vaccine. Is July too late to give it? Is it ever too late in a season to give a mosquito related disease vaccination? Thanks! Janice

No it is not too late Janice, protection is quick and many cases of EEE are in the later parts of the summer to early fall. DrO

Thanks Dr. O! I have run into one complication: The current vaccine for EEE and WEE is combined with a Tetanus vaccine. My boy has already had his Tetanus shot for this year back in April. Is there any danger to a 27 year old horse in doubling the Tetanus vaccine? Does the danger override the need for the EEE and WEE vaccine? Thank you! Janice

There may be an increase in vaccine reactions in those revaccinated quickly but this risk small with Tetanus. As to the cost versus benefit that would be best discussed with someone familiar with the risks in your area. DrO
