Dear all

I am about to send away my 3yo for breaking and she will be barefoot for the first few days, then shod in front, then shod behind after she has been backed.

She has been trimmed since one month old and will happily stand, lift feet etc. for the farrier.

An experienced horse friend of mine always bangs their hooves with a hammer and an upside-down nail before the first shoeing to get them used to the sensation. Do any of you have any other tips for preparing her as I won't be there and it won't be the farrier that she is used to? This is a filly that is normally very quiet except if you try to do the one thing she hates (mane-pulling) in which case she is a crazy demon. I don't want to add shoeing to that list.

Thanks for your advice as always.

Hi Imogen, just have to ask -- does she need shoes?

Our climate is rather different and so are the roads - wet mud in the fields plus granite chip with tarmac roads means yes, they need shoes... They get very bare and sore otherwise.

All the best

My horses have never had a problem making the transition, I start messing with their feet the day they're born & tap on them with my hands. No hammers needed. The most they ever do is lean away a bit until they figure out it's okay. She should be fine.

I think with a good farrier you don't have to worry about 'first shoes' With all my 'problem and other horses' it never gave a problem when they were comfortable with a farrier whatever he did was allright. Even if he shod'warm' Though then I had to cover an eye to keep the smoke out.
Strange though what upsets them and what they accept as perfectly normal?
Cascade fi couldn't care less about what you put under his feet[though we really had to be carefull the first few times he was trimmed] but gets the scare of his life if you put a saddle pad on his back
