I have been 'gifted' a beautiful 7 year old tennessee walking horse gelding from a friend who has developed severe allergies to his horses. He just wants them to go to good homes and has offered me this particular horse. The horse will be travelling from Northern California to Saskatchewan, Canada. A long haul. A friend of mine recently had a horse shipped from Missouri to Saskatchewan and now, 2 weeks later this two year old has Shipping Fever. Is there anything preventative that I should consider. He won't be coming until mid-August.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Hello Sherri,
Shipping fever is usually a term for any of the respiratory infections that a horse can get when he comes into contact with infectious horses while traveling or a disease endemic on the new farm, often Strangles. Making sure he travels with healthy horses and is well vaccinated for influenza, rhinopneumanitis, and Strangles may all be of benefit though there are other possible diseases but are usually milder than these for which there are vaccines.
