Hi I have wormed my mare that was in foal when I bought her with ivermectin as she came with a medium faecal worm count. Firstly is there a safe tapewormer for use in pregnancy? Second all my other horses get a pramox (Moxidectin & praziquantel) wormer in November . I know the praziquantel isn't recommended in pregnancy so wasn't going to give it to the mare but now in the small print I notice it says not to turn horses out for 3 days after as there are unknown effects on the environment! All my horses live at pasture and I've never read it before but am now concerned that I should not use it as the pregnant mare may pick some chemical up off the pasture (although I do remove DrOppings. Do you know if it is safe to use on other horses grazing in the same paddock with the pregnant mare? Thanks

Hello Jo, You will find a discussion on the safety of praziquantel in pregnant mares at, Treatments and Medications for Horses » Dewormers (Anthelminics) » Praziquantel. As to the environmental study deal I have no doubt this was required by law until such studies are undertaken. Usually such studies are concerned with the effect on bugs, fish, etc... DrO
