Well I went from winter to summer. My brother in law put electricity in my lean-to. I had him put outlets in where I would normally hang fans in the summer.
After giving this some thought I was wondering if just putting in outdoor ceiling fans would be even better! Is there any downfalls or dangers in this?
I have read that they also keep the bird population down in the lean-to that would be a plus! And I imagine they would help keep the bugs at bay too!
Does anyone use ceiling fans in their barns/lean-to's? Any problems?

Diane, I was puttering around this morning reading old posts and ran across yours. I had ceiling fans in my run in shed and they worked just fine. They were "outdoor" fans. They are inexpensive, but don't last too long since they were not "industrial" grade. I put them on a timer so they didn't run constantly. They did help with birds/flies.
For my new barn I bought "industrial" fans. We haven't installed the fans yet, but I will let you know they hold up after I have used them a while. (I bought them late last fall, and now it's getting time to get them put up...)

I had outdoor ceiling fans installed in my barn and they worked great until the hurricanes came at which point I had to remove them between storms on account of the blades flying off.
Industrial fans interest me a great deal and I would like to put some up before it gets hot again.

AH A timer what a good idea. I have been shopping around on the internet looking at fans. I would also like to have a light in the fan too.
Vicki do have a web site that has the industrial fans on it??? I my as well put up something that will last.... My problem is I need something a on a short shaft my ceilings aren't real tall.

I have purchased farm and industrial fans in the past--the big round kind on wheels and I seem to burn them up in a year (the motors wear out). And they were not cheap--$350-500 each. You would think they would last longer. And they are too loud.
So...Being this barn has been an experiment in so many ways, I bought different types of fans to try. If they don't work it will be a big $ screw up. The name of the fans is (no joke) Big Ass Fans. They have an extensive website and are very nice to deal with. These fans are probably not something you would want to put in a run in shed. It would be more for a larger barn or arena. My ceilings are 14' and I think that is pretty close to the minimum height for this type of fan.
I had better luck believe it or not with my $50 Menards outdoor ceiling fans which were almost flush to the rafter than I did with the 350-500 dollar fans. And the ceiling fans were much much quieter. And they lasted three years!

LOL...LOL... my WalMart $11 box fans mounted at the top of each stall do a pretty good job too... maybe not great, and the screening on them is getting a bit raggety after 3 years, but I did not expect them to last this long as they run from May-October each year.

Remember my blades went flying off my wally world fan last year and bout gave me a heart attack!!! I don't think I like them anymore

Oh Diane, you started my morning off just right with a big laugh. "$11 is not enough!" How true! When I think what is "invested" in the horse operation around here...egads. My husband would most certainly, loudly, agree with you! Ha, ha, snort, slap knee, etc.!

We don't discuss money and horses around here in the same breath, it's too dangerous! When shopping for farm, barn, and horses you're never supposed to look at the price tag!
I've had those Wally World fans for about 5 years. I have one for each stall and they work great. The only thing I don't like about them is the extension cords I have to run down the aisle. I attach them to the outside of each stall wall hanging from the top rail of the bars that form the top half front wall of the stalls. (like MD barns have.) When it's hot and buggy the horses stand right in front of them and seem to really enjoy the breeze.

Here is a site that has quite a variety of fans including industrial ceiling fans on short rods as well as wall-mounted fans.
