Hi. My dog's kennel runs alongside my horse pen, and the dog sometimes barks at night. I want to install an outdoor bark near the kennel. According to the package, "when the control is within range of constant barking, an internal microphone picks up the sound and the unit is activated. Th control emits an ultrasonic sound. The sound can only be heard by the dog. Startled by the high-pitched sound, the dog should stop barking, as it will associate its bark with this unpleasant noise." Before I install this system, I want make sure it won't annoy my three horses and two mules in the adjoining pen.

A great question Heidi to which I don't think we know the answer. I see where they have studied frequency awareness in whales, fish, and pigs but cannot find any such research in horses...amazing. We have had some members report there horses were not effected by the high frequency emitting from the devices put on the front of cars to warn deer away but I have seen a report where deer are not effected by this either. I have no idea how this might relate to your device. Does anyone out there use a dog whistle around their horses and have they seen a response?

I use a dog whistle all the time, and either the horses can't hear it, or they've gotten used to it, because I don't ever see a response from them.

Also, when I lived near my parents, one of our neighbors put up one of the devices that Heidi mentioned because another neighbor's dogs barked all night. My horses never seemed to react to that either. In fact, they were calmer when the dogs stopped barking, lol.

Thanks, Dr O and Nicole. I put up the device and all is well. Good point that the horses appreciate less barking, too.
