I live in a temperate climate in southern Illinois. What season would it be best for me to do fecal exams? I've heard that the winter can be a heavier load than you think b/c the cold temps do not kill the parasites in the pasture.

Hello Angela,
While it is true the cold does not kill the larvae on the pasture it does prevent the eggs from developing, so in the spring when the temps warm up there is a large group that mature to infective larvae. (this and other important aspects of parasite life cycle is explained in the overview. It is not so much the time of year you run your fecals as it is where in the deworming cycle you check.
