Are there any guidelines for square footage requirements per horse when designing a paddock (dry lot)? I have 6-8 horses and am questioning what square footage guideline I should use to determine if my paddock is large enough?

My paddock is used to hold the horses off the pasture during muddy weather to protect the pastures from damage. It connects to the pastures so most of the year the paddock is open to the pastures.

The paddock is mud free so the horses are able to use the entire space. Any suggestions on space/horse would be appreciated.

The bigger the better Heidi, for that many horses I would not want it much smaller than a half acre unless they really get along well.
