I just built a new horse farm on what used to be corn & soybean fields. The horses came to the farm in Oct '08, and we had them all wormed with Quest three days prior to moving. In Feb my vet did fecals on each horse and they all came back negative. Would it be safe to drag the pastures given their fecals are all negative and we are on a pasture that was previously a corn field with no horse exposure? There is a winter's worth of manure in those pastures - too much to clean up manually!

Heidi, thanks for asking this question. I've wondered about it myself. The barn where I board drags the pastures and while I know it's not an optimal management practice, it's the more practical solution for large areas and I don't know a barn around here that doesn't do it (or just leave the piles of manure to disintegrate on their own). Yet from reading info here and elsewhere, it's not recommended. So, naturally, I worry. I've had fecals run on my mare 2x a year for the past several years, spring & fall. All have come up negative. Additionally, the BO has had fecal checks from each pasture and again they have come up negative each time. I guess I can stop worrying.
