A member recently pointed out this article contained some confusing information. I have rewritten this article to increase clarity. Hope you find it helpful. DrO

Thanks, Dr O. Very helpful! So, if I'm reading it correctly, I can mix the salts ahead of time and just add it to his feed every day with molasses instead of dosing him before and after the rides. This is something to do just for the week of summer camp, right? We have two lessons a day in 90+ degrees, which we do not, of course, do at home. At home, I have a half-brick in his feed tub. Thanks for all the info!!

Yes I think that would be a good way of dealing with a week of heat stress. DrO

DrO, I asked myself why we are mixing regular salt with Lite salt, so I went back and re-read the article, but didn't find an answer. Did I miss it? Why aren't we just using the regular salt?

Noah, I think it has to do with the potassium in the lite salt. Dr. O, My mare who had not been finishing her miles was put on lasix about a month ago and she has begun to race better. I mixed the contents of 1 container of Lite salt and an equal amount of regular salt and I have been putting 1 tbls in her feed 3 times a day, she seems to be eating well and she has finally started to gain weight and not look so dull. I know in the article it says to give this mixture all at once ( 3 tbls), but I do not think she would eat if the meal was overladen with salt. Is this still an acceptable way to get the electrolytes into her without putting her off her feed, since she is getting a weekly shot of lasix when she races. Rachelle

noah, rtrotter is right the Lite Salt contains potassium. Splitting up the electrolyte will have no adverse effects and may even improve the horses ability to absorb and use it. DrO

Dr O,(and others) There is a lot of research on use of electrolytes out of University of Guelph. Look for Lidinger, Geor, Ecker and McCutcheon. Cheers, Cheryl
