Posted on Saturday, Apr 25, 2009 - 1:32 pm: OK so this is a new one to me and I can't quite figure it out.A horse person I know stopped by one day when I was getting my arena going and said she was going to put up a horse play pen HMMMM. I know her horse well (she's scared to death of him) I did a little ground work for her so he would develop some manners, just basically the Parelli 7 games. He was a very good student and it did help her manage him on the ground. The horse actually is a VERY good smart horse, he just takes advantage of her because she is scared of him. Anyway since he had this remarkable change with the 7 games she decided to study Parelli a little bit (please let's not get into a Parelli discussion) So she has this "play pen" built it has the diamater of a round pen...60' she had it made out of vinyl fencing. It only has ONE rail about the height of the second rail in a "normal arena" So I asked her what she was going to do in there??? "are you going to "free lunge"? Cuz' boy I can see if the best horse jumping out of there if they wanted too...The old mare could go under it AND Vinyl breaks so easily. Well she said she was going to lunge in there...so what's the purpose? WHY do you even need it? BECAUSE it's his play pen.....OK now I'm scratching my head trying to figure this idea out....IF you put toys in there (a horse ball for ex) it will roll right out...IF you just put him in there (It's in her yard) he will be reaching for the grass and that vinyl will break...I've seen what he does to her vinyl fence reaching on the other side! I had my curiosity up so much I had to google Horse Play Pen...I THINK it is a Parelli thing, couldn't find any info. The only real reason I can think of is She is scared to death of riding him, she has a very nice arena...but she said that was to much space for him and he would act up. HMMMM. She has had this horse for I believe 3 years now and has never even cantered him...She will not trail ride him either. SO what's up with the "play pen" anyone heard of it....Maybe I need one for Hank |

They used it for round pen work as an easy portable round pen. However, the horses were already trained and they did not challenge it. Also - the horses were worked in there, not turned out to "play". I am not sure they are still advocating that.I use step in posts and the 1" electric fencing often for an easy way to fence of part of the pasture for my two horses. I don't electrify the fencing, and as long as there is grass to eat, they don't challenge it. Lilo |

But, it should be constructed in such a way that if the horse does escape, it doesn't injure itself The step post/tape pens are never used while charged. "Play" is a Parellism for work/doing stuff with your horse. The choice of word is meant to evoke an attitude of partnership, not a "job." Anyway, from your description, that's my best guess of what she's doing. Jerre (for full disclosure, I'm studying Level 3 in PNH) |

Hank is trained to level 2.That's what I wondered about with the "friend" she has NO idea what she is doing, She is not up to at liberty, let alone the 7 games. She can barely lead him! I tried at Liberty with Hank last year, he did very well, we were out in the pasture I had him doing circles around me as I walked...was so cool! So one day I took him down to the arena(before it had a fence) to play with him. We were in tune and "light" so I left him off the rope and tried the at liberty "circle game" he was doing wonderfully after the third go around...my goal was 5 circles...he took off like a wild banshee up the hill, I couldn't help but laugh until I had tears in my eyes. He was still in the pasture and couldn't go anywhere. That's why I kinda wondered what this lady was going to do, her horse has no liberty or round pen training, I can see him going though OR over the fence and ending up in the next county |

Everyone -- no matter what system or discipline of study -- looks pretty terrible at some stage. And if she has no idea what she's doing, it's probably a good thing that she's found a course to follow.I'll bet Hank had fun with your mini-liberty session -- especially when he could end it on his terms!
