Posted on Thursday, May 28, 2009 - 10:59 am: Last week I went to the vet because I had ran out of paste banamine, and like to have some around for mild colics, fever, sore feet, things I can handle without a vet, or under the vets advice. The price of the paste banamine had gone up from $21 to $32!!! That's only 3 doses for a 1000# horse. The injectable banamine was $28 for a 10 dose vial for a 1000# horse. BIG difference! So for those of you who are squeamish about shots as I am. The injectable banamine is much, much cheaper. You can squirt it in their mouth as is, or if you prefer mix with applesauce ect. I have used it once and it seemed to take effect within 15 mins. |

I asked WHY the big price difference in the two forms, he said he didn't know. The price of that will probably go up now too Compared to over $10 for a dose of paste and $2.80 for the injectable the savings is BIG. |

One, I think, is probably rotting away in my first aid kit in my trailer (will have to remember to toss that for sure) and the other is still in my fridge, hopefully not expired. |

I also like to use it on Flash, it seems to give her more relief then bute for her arthritis flares. |

Flunixin however appears to be absorbed very rapidly from the gi tract and I too have dispensed it to be given in such a manner for those who do not like to give injections. Also another note of caution, once a bottle has been contaminated with a previously used syringe it should not be used for future injection so label it: oral use only.DrO |

I use the injectable IV for our rare colic cases (knock no wood) and occasionally IM if one wouldn't stand quietly enough to hit the vein. I'd imagine if I had a fight on my hands it might be a little safer to give orally rather than risk breaking a needle. If that were the case is it the same dosage as the injection? |
