My Veterinarian came today for some routine vaccinations and was telling me that he has had a large number of vaccination reactions during the excessively rainy weather this past month. He is not saying that it is related to the weather, just noting the coincidence. He also seems to think that many of the horses who have had reactions are of related Paso Fino bloodlines. One of his main customers has related Paso Fino horses who all have severe reactions to their vaccinations. He has tried using Banamine and other injections that should ward of reactions to no avail and has finally concluded that these individuals lives are at greater risk from the vaccinations than from the diseases that would be prevented. Just wanted to share this information. While I've had an appendix registered quarter horse mare in the past (many years ago) who was reactive, and one of my Arabians once had a reaction (I now split my vaccinations into two farm calls), so far there are no problems amongst mine from their shots today. Since I've been splitting the shots into two farm calls my one boy who had a reaction a few years ago has been fine. I take no other routine precautions than splitting the vaccinations into two farm calls each time they are due.
