Some has put together a new page for Pete Ramey's articles to make it easier to read through his information.

I found the article "Feeding the Hoof" especially interesting regarding balancing minerals.

HMMMM Angie very interesting, it does sound a lot like my situation!!! I had a feeling minerals may come into play here after I remembered what Henry had said.

There has been something bothering me about Hanks hooves for about 6 mos. The outer wall has been crinkling and peeling off. The last time the farrier was here I asked what that was it looked so horrible, I wanted him to rasp the outer wall some to get rid of it, but for some reason he didn't think it was a good idea. He had never seen an outer hoof wall do that to that extreme. The other 2 kept in the same conditions didn't have the problem.

I stopped giving Hank a VERY good hoof supplement last fall, the farrier said HMMMM that coincides with the line in his hoof. It had Zinc and copper amongst other things and a healthy dose of biotin.

I started Hank back on the hoof supplement about 2 mos. ago....I have removed it during my mineral experiment...which has plenty of copper and zinc ect. and didn't want want to overdose him...he is just getting biotin at the moment.

ANYway I JUST noticed yesterday that the crinkles, and cracks are gone! I will have to see if I have a before and after pic it's quite amazing!

The minerals I am using are specified for our area, If I get a little richer I may go the whole route and have my hay and pasture tested since I now have my hay in for the year.

Thanks for the link!!! At least now I know I am not totally off base

Thanks Angie!
This is a little off the mineral topic, but wanted to say thanks for the link...its great to have PR's articles together. I just got his book a few weeks ago and love it. Im a huge barefoot advocate. Although, I dont believe barefoot is always an option with some 'domesticated' horses. (some of my most beloved horses would probably have been culled by mother nature a long time ago, if barefoot and in the wild.)
...Ive never tried hoof boots, but have a friend in Az that swears by them:-)
