I was wondering if there is any danger to humans from the intra-nasal strangles vaccine. I gave it to one of my horses successfully, and then went to give it to the other horse, and she tossed her head when I started to give it, and I sort of got showered with a mist of what was left into my face.

I can't remember what vaccine we were giving, but the same thing happened to me years ago. I panicked and asked the vet. I remember him saying it was possible but highly unlikely that i would get something from getting it in my eye. I hope its the same for you, was it a live vaccine? Would that make a difference? On a side note if Dr. O chimes in. How long does a strangles vaccine work? i have given it religiously for years but slacked of this year. And a farm nearby just got quarantined. To make matters more interesting the owner is a friend and has come by often. and during the time they were manifesting it...Strangles makes me nervous... good luck samantha, I bet its nothing to worry about. joj

The product is considered safe to use but I would not handle it if I were immune compromised. The vaccine is consided effective 6 months to a year. If your horses contract it they are easily treated, see the article for more. DrO

I've had the intra nasal strangles vaccine snorted into my face several times with no effect except the laughter of everyone else in the barn. I wouldn't be too concerned.

A great woman Vet. we had here a few years ago before she moved on to Colorado said that getting around the intra-nasal strangles vaccine kept her from catching any nasty upper respiratory problems each season. She would usually come in the early fall to administer it, and maybe it was just luck but I didn't get down with respiratory problems those years. Then she moved along and a year came when all my boys had one or another kind of open injury when it was the usual time for that vaccine, so my new Vet. suggested not administering it until all those problems were cleared up, just in case any would get into the wounds and cause a problem. Maybe it was just coincidence, but I sure did have a couple bad years after not being exposed to the intra nasal strangles in the fall! Dr. O -- "no scientific basis?" Perhaps the power of positive thinking . . .
