I bought a mare in March that had been bred in January. After she arrived at our barn, I dewormed her along with the rest of my horses with Zimectrin Gold. Only now did I find out this dewormer is not approved for pregnant mares. Is this something I need to worry about? What ingredient is in this that is not approved?

Not at all Julie, even if not approved both the ivermectin and praziquantel are considered safe during pregnancy. Many praziquantel products are starting to get approval. I would be surprised if the literature with the Zimectrin Gold stated it was not approved as would be required by law if this were true. Does it?

I didn't read the paperwork that came with it. I only saw this in a catalog, stating that this particular dewormer had not yet been approved by law for pregnant mares. I was not aware that some dewormers may not be safe for pregnant mares. Thanks for easing my mind!
