Posted on Monday, Jul 13, 2009 - 3:46 pm: Since I have recently gotten back into riding again, I can't believe the changes that have happened in the horse world. From riding equipment to medical problems.First off, I have always had horses. But the last 15 yrs was only mini's. I have NEVER had a sick, or injured horse. I had been very lucky. But now, as you all know, this spring summer has been one thing after another for me in each area. I would like to get a couple of horse magazines that would fill me in on all the new stuff, maybe littler training..medical stuff. Which one do you get that you enjoy? I would probably be interested mostly in the western pleasure type. Thanks Tami |

However, there are some other excellent mags out there. theHorse is one I can think of; it is mostly horse health related. Before you subscribe, I'd suggest looking on line. Most of the mags have an online site as well. |

I used to get Equss and horse illustrated. They are so full of advertisements I don't think they are worth the price they charge anymore. With HA I really have found I don't need to subscribe to magazines anymore. There are many good websites that you can find just about anything out....I always end up checking them out here tho...got to be careful with some of them |

Posted on Monday, Jul 13, 2009 - 8:30 pm: I have cut back to "The Horse" and "Equus" plus the magazine that comes from the Arabian Horse of America folks. The "Trail Rider" magazine is informative if that is what you are interested in. Frankly, I have so little time to read magazines these days that I should not get them at all. I receive frequent E-mails articles from "The Horse" perhaps because I am a subscriber, and find these quite interesting and cutting-edge, though I look to HA as my main authority. If I were involved in showing as my daughter and niece are I would consider subscribing to "The Chronicle of the Horse," "Horse and Rider" or "Horse Illustrated" again. Choices depend upon your interests. |

Posted on Monday, Jul 13, 2009 - 9:18 pm: I also subscribe to "The Horse" emails, used to get Equus and Horse Illutrated. Loved the breed profiles in HI, but thought some of the rest of it was light weight. Equus seemed more up to date with new medical info.I have a special offer here right now for $10 year, seems they offer rock bottom prices for very early renewal, and if you let it expire. I might let that one back in the house. I do so much reading online, I very seldom read a magazine any more! Reader's Digest and Prevention might get read cover to cover. |

The articles, DrO, and the collective knowledge of the members here are the most valuable one-stop source of help that I've found. It's odd, but I find myself looking at horse magazines for the advertisements to see what's new If you want, here is a link that describes a number of currently available magazines. The Horse and Equus are included there. https://www.world-newspapers.com/horses.html |

I still enjoy reading it but should probably let that go since I always come here for every question I have....I guess I am saying that DrO is the "Perfect Source"!!! |

Posted on Wednesday, Jul 15, 2009 - 1:32 am: I have read Equus cover to cover for about 12 years or so. Still consider it the top magazine of all I've tried - I appreciate it for its medical/health focus. I also currently get Horse Illustrated, The Horse and Horse Journal. Horse Journal is my second favorite for its product reviews and testing. I won't be renewing HI because it doesn't provide enough in-depth stuff for my taste. Over the years I've tried Dressage Today, Perfect Horse and Horse and Rider.Good luck finding what you enjoy. |

Posted on Thursday, Aug 13, 2009 - 7:50 am: I have them all too, Nancy, up until two years ago when I quit the subscription. I also have every Equus mag since day one of publication and many years of Arabian Horse Times. I hate throwing them all out, but never thought they'd be worth any money. I've considered donating them to our local library. I wish there was an active Pony Club or 4-H group here with a "headquarters" that could keep and use them. They seem like such a good resource. I wonder though if today's kids just go on line for everything.I agree about HA. One area that is lacking, imo, is "product review." And that is through no fault of Dr.O. I think it would be great if members were more active in posting about products they've used and liked or not liked. There's so many of us, with so many types of horses, etc., it could be a great source of info for everyone. |
