Just curious....

I do vaccinate my horses for rabies as we have rabid skunks, etc in our county. The local Vet(who is no longer here) put down two rabid horses last year. My question is, they use the same vaccine for dogs and they only need to be vaccinated every three years. Why do horses who get the same vaccine, in a larger dose, have to be vaccinated every year?

Hello Karen,
There are no scientific experiments that have been done to determine how long the vaccine is effective in horses. But based on epidemiological surveys (horses that get rabies that have been vaccinated) it is believed the vaccine does not work as well in horses as it does in dogs and cats. The reason for this is not known and always the question of whether proper procedures used so future studies may find either more or less frequent vaccination warranted.
