I just bought a new bag of crimped grain and it is loaded with tiny black grain beetles. Is it safe to feed to my horse?

Carole...I wouldn't feed my horses anything that has bug infestation. I tend to stay on the side of caution at any cost.

I agree with Caballovr - don't feed the grain..and bring it back to your feed store. It's quite likely they'll give you a refund or exchange.

If you keep and try to feed this, the number of beetles will steadily increase as the grain disappears and the bugs defecate in it. All of the feed bags that I get tell you not to feed bug-infested product. Take it back. After a very bad experience this summer that caused me to have to make three consecutive long drives back and forth to the dealer within the same week, to exchange a large order of buggy grain for good grain, I have switched over to using a credit card to make my purchases so that I can refuse to pay a bill for bad product, if necessary, without being forced to return it multiple times. In retrospect, after they gave me the second load of bad grain that they told me was newer and fine (it wasn't -- was the same lot and I took their word for this without examining the tags), I should have told them that they would have to pick it up and replace it with good product if they wanted payment. After this experience of having to make three trips, I also changed feed stores.

Hello Carole, Though the bugs themselves are probably not harmful their presence suggests a poorly cared for and probably old product. Certainly the nutritional value has decreased and their may be other problems not seen with it. It should be returned for exchange but check the new bag before you leave, often these problems run in the whole lot. DrO

Thanks to all for the good advice - I'm changing stores and brands!

If the store had not preopened the bags the problem may be at the wholesalers end and difficult to detect. If the store willing takes the product back and helps you find a bug free bag you should reconsider changing feed stores. at least based on this one incidence. DrO
