Posted on Tuesday, Nov 3, 2009 - 4:25 pm: DrO and Everyone;I've been asked on here, and in private emails, if I would post some pictures of my horses hoofs showing examples of my trimming. I have debated about how to go about doing that. Four horses, a time period of over 2 1/2 years = LOTS of pictures to sort through, re-size, comment on, and upload. Also LOTS of mistakes to explain!! I would have to do 4 separate discussions most likely; one for each horse. Well, that sounded like more than I wanted to do, so for those that are interested, I am going to just start out with posting some pictures from yesterday. I will start with a very muddy Cody. I try to tweak (bevel { mustang roll} touch up, check bars) every 2 weeks. This was actually 3 weeks exactly. His hoofs looked GREAT!!! I really didn't have to do much. A few minutes, not an hour like when I first started! One thing to keep in mind as I add pictures: ALL of the hoofs (16 of 'em) developed long toes/underrun heels from my first attempts at trimming. And flares! Just about back to normal now on everyone. Still fighting a few things, I'll comment as I add pictures, if I add more pictures. Let me know if you can see writing on each picture. Here goes: |

One of these days I will actually remember to bring the camera to the barn and show you how Sugar's hooves are coming along. They aren't perfect, but I think they are improved thanks to your (and others') advice. Erika |

I don't see anything that needs drastic fixing, maybe heels in hinds? I seem to have trouble with hind hoofs, and white or striped hoofs! (optical illusions ya know!)Just keep on tweaking him, and letting the hoof go where it's supposed to be. There is a bit a toe flare yet in fronts, you hopefully can see why in the upcoming pictures. I am adding a few pictures: Labeled, but in case you can't read them, the first Cody's last trim from a farrier early 2007. Compare to my full body shot above. Another full body shot showing him standing under, long toes in front, and I got the heels waaay to low in the hinds which took forever to grow back. I'll see about getting some pictures of Tango up, his hoofs were more like Hanks; he's still not where I want him. Advice to anyone attempting to learn how to trim your horses yourself: DO NOT TAKE ON MORE THAN ONE HORSE THE WHILE YOU LEARN HOW TO TRIM!!! Yes, I am yelling that out loud & clear! |

Posted on Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 - 5:30 pm: Hey Sharon,There was a couple of months I thought he was hurting in the hind legs as he kept resting them more than normal. It was late winter/early spring, so didn't matter for riding. I took his hind heels down too far, my most painful "goof" probably with all 4 horses. I think it hurt me more worrying, than it hurt him physically! Since starting this journey, seems all my spare time has been reading about hoofs, studying pictures, taking pictures, trimming, more pictures. I have my system down now, I think, and might actually have time to ride; Or not. |
