Posted on Tuesday, Dec 8, 2009 - 3:58 am: recently moved to a barn that uses Safe choice feed. I've read pro and cons about this feed. My one horse doesn't "clean it up" as well as he used with just oats and beet pulp feed.I'd like to keep them on a complete feed and like the ingredients I see in Triple Crown low starch.I like to avoid feeds with corn, molasses, high in soy products, and that are pelleted.as many of you may know,Safe choice is a pelleted feed and has ground corn.My horses only eat about one large scoop 2x/day,get about 3 flakes of high quality t/a hay plus pasture(though it's getting sparse with winter coming).the horses are 18 and 19,are on not ridden, and maintain their weight pretty well.would like some feedback on this as I plan to make some change..Debbie |

If you are concerned about starch and non-structural carbs, it isn't one of the lowest carb choices out there. I switched to Triple Crown Lite because the NSC's are a concern for my IR and cushing's horse. You can look up the feed analysis online at the triple crown site and do a comparison. But I think most of the low starch foods do have soybeans in them. Are you just hoping to get something that your horse will eat with gusto, or are you concerned nutritionally? |

I like the ingredients in the triple crown better,it's not a pelleted feed and has no corn.right now the safe choice their eating is wet with enough water to help mix in their supplements and it looks like mush because of the way the pellets break down I guess.the one horse that doesn't seem to care for it,has some bran and oil mixed in and he finishes it easily. I prefer not to use corn oil,so I'm not keen on this either.guess I've pretty much made my choice with the triple crown low starch.this will cost a little more so would appreciate any feedback from people using these feeds, nutritional value etc. Debbie |

Unless they bring their own, they get the safe choice. I have never had a horse that I can remember fail to eat it. I never worry about the hay content. AS long as it is not moldy, I hae no worries. Granted, I have some easy keepers, but it is all good here where feed is concerned. If I remember correctly we have a thread a year or so ago about the safe choice vs Triple crown smack down. IMHO... SF won. Hands down.IF I remember correctly...lol |
