What kind of water trough do you use? How do you keep the horses from wrecking it? Does anyone use the style of hard plastic/vinyl trough that will accomodate a screw in de-icer? I need to get a new trough, I have had one called tuff stuff, now I am considering an aluminuium alloy.

Lori, I have two Rubbermaid tanks. A fifty gallon and a 100 gallon. I have had them for years. Both are very sturdy and tough. I use a de-icer that floats on top of the water, but my tubs have a plug on the bottom for immersible heaters, at least I think they do. I'll have to look the next time, my husband usually does the water chores, but I remember seeing the plug. I like the plastic tubs because they are lighter and I can dump them much easier then the heavy aluminum ones. Rachelle

Lori, at the barn where I board, they also use the heavy duty rubber/plastic tubs (although i do not know what brand). They've used the same ones for as long as I've boarded there; longer actually since they were there when we arrived. So it's been at least 5 years. They accomodate a heating element as well. Over all this time, they have born the wear & tear of horse play well and have never been replaced.

Ditto here for the Rubbermaid water tanks. We use the screw in tank heater and it's getting harder and harder every year to change back to the plug due to the threads getting goofy but hubby assures me you can just buy that part to replace on the tank. I had a smaller rubbermaid tank that I use to dump grain in on days I was in a hurry. Someone (Tango is my guess) stood in it a few too many times so now it leaks if I were to use it for water but still o.k. for temp feeding and for washing blankets in.

Used the Rubbermaids for twenty years. Screw in tank heaters work great because my horses play with the floating ones and have burned them out by pulling them out of the water! Only replaced one tank due to Cleo, who practically climbs in them in summer to splash herself. Angie, what a great idea. The large one I got rid of could have kept hay or feed off the ground to keep it from getting peed on by the mares. Wish I had thought of that!

I have 2 40 gallon troughs- Tuff Stuff or some similar brand. I have had them 3 years now and they are still in great shape. Although sometimes I wish I had bigger ones, actually these are good for me because I can dump them if I need to and I move them around easily to match where I want the horses at the moment. No drain plugs or places for screw-in heaters, however. If I had bigger ones I would need the drain, for sure. Fortunately the weather is usually warm enough once the sun comes up to melt the ice...not to mention that horse-feet make fine ice breakers!
