Posted on Thursday, May 13, 2010 - 9:15 pm: Dr O,Is it OK to feed an IR horse beet pulp with molasses? Does it help to soak and drain the beet pulp first before feeding it to an IR animal? I read the HA article of beet pulp, but did not see this addressed. If it is elsewhere in HA, please advise, Thanks, nancy |

Posted on Friday, May 14, 2010 - 8:55 pm: Dr. O, 'this is the link to the beet pulp: https://www.mwagri.com/products/shreds.pdf Total sugar is less than 10%, don't know how much is molasses. I was told to soak it first and then rinse it in a colander to remove the sugar. Just wondered if you agreed. I was wanting to feed it to a horse who just started pergoglide and has some loose manure. Thanks for your help. |

Posted on Friday, May 14, 2010 - 9:35 pm: Funny mine got looser poops when I fed beet pulp.Nancy from what I've read about beet pulp is rinsing it and draining it until the water runs clear means the sugar is gone( or at least supposedly safe for the IR types). I did find that stuff packed on the pounds on my easy keepers, and I didn't feed much of it. The boys didn't seem to like it real well, the mare did...but she got fatter |

My veterinarian recommended it for him, for the loose manure, but of course the "no molasses" kind, which is not available around here. My guy has lost so much weight that his ribs are showing - lol - I had forgotten that he HAD any! I think I'll just feed a little a day to see what happens, after I find out from Dr. O if it is safe or not.Too bad I didn't enter them in the "Greatest Loser" !! Thanks! |

Actually, I had him for about 12 years and never had a problem with colic until then. Scared me, I'll tell you!! Extruded type only for me!! Good luck. Dustee |

Posted on Saturday, May 15, 2010 - 5:12 pm: I tasted the horses beet pulp shreds and coliced I had a horrible belly ache and I only tasted a little of it...BTW I thought it tasted like soaked paper shreds,( I'm opening myself up here with that comment!) gross stuff! MOST Horses seem to like tho. You couldn't pay me to make a meal of it! |

Until Dr.O. answers you here is a good article explaining the glycemic index ect. of beet pulp, it also explains why my horses gained weight on it...should give Bonesy some! When I was feeding beet pulp I remember DR.O. saying it doesn't really belong in an easy keepers diet. https://www.shady-acres.com/susan/beetpulp.shtml |

Probably about 1-2 cups (after hydration) a day. Very little. But his ribs ARE showing, lol! |

The natural sugars left behind in the beet pulp after processing are variable, less than 10% usually, and are slowly digested and absorbed. Why not find a beet pulp product that does not have molasses added or at least contact the company that manufactures the product to get an idea of how much molasses they are adding.DrO |

Posted on Sunday, May 16, 2010 - 10:26 am: Dr. O, will do. I would like to find a BP that does not have molasses, but that is pretty difficult around here, so I will contact the manufacturer. For now I will soak and rinse numerous times, as my vet suggested, but for long term it would probably be better to find another source of beet pulp if possible, I just wondered if I was being too picky, but obviously you agree that this might not be the optimal product for him. Thanks for your reply. nancy |

Posted on Sunday, May 16, 2010 - 10:53 am: Nancy I remember people talking about using Speedi beet for their IR horses, I don't know how this would fit in your budget, but thought I'd throw it out there...seems it goes a little further than "regular beet pulp"https://www.emeraldvalleyequine.com/speedi-beet.cfm However if you are worried about your horses diarrhea being caused by the pergolide I would just give it some time...beet pulp or not it will probably straighten itself out. As you saw on my thread about Sam a few other peole reported diarrhea when first starting pergolide and all resolved eventually. I would be hesitant to "change" his feed which could lead to tummy upset...JMHO |

He is still getting everything else as normal, I just added a cup of "wet BP" last night, I figured that amount would not be much to cause an issue (I hope)I like this link and will look into it, thanks. |

Posted on Sunday, May 16, 2010 - 1:37 pm: Diane, it could be total coincidence, but there were no loose stools when I went to clean stalls. Maybe it was the BP, and maybe it was him getting used to the drug. We'll see what happens..... |
